Ritu and Ujjwal's wedding was a complete single-day function, and it began in the quietest possible way. Long before the lawn filled up, Ritu sat in one of the changing rooms in a deep red lehenga with kundan and emerald jewellery, while a single patterned light threw gold bokeh across the wall behind her. The most honest moment of the morning was not a posed one. Ritu's mother stepped in to drape her dupatta, adjusted the fall of it over her shoulder, and the two of them looked at each other for a second longer than the task required. After that came the red-backdrop portraits, the bangle and nath detail frames, and the flying-dupatta sequence where we lit the veil from behind so the mesh caught the light mid-air. Outside, Ujjwal was already on the stage in an ivory sherwani and safa, framed against a white floral backdrop with hanging garlands. Ritu's entry was the turning point. She walked in flanked by her parents, past the peach-and-gold draped entrance, and then the cold fire went up on both sides of the aisle. Guests stood, phones came out, and the sparklers threw hard white light across a red lehenga in a completely dark hall. Shooting an entry like this is a single-take problem, so we metered for the sparks in advance and held position rather than chasing the moment.
The varmala followed under the chandelier-lit mandap, with dry-ice smoke rolling across the stage floor and cold fire firing behind the couple. Ritu and Ujjwal exchanged garlands, then raised their joined hands above the smoke for a frame that has become the cover image of this story. The floral backdrop at Chaudhary Lawn, wreaths, hanging jasmine strings and a central chandelier, gave us a clean, symmetrical stage to work against.
The night closed with couple portraits in the venue's floral walkway, the stretch of draped pillars, marigold and rose garlands, fairy-lit trunks and warm uplighting that runs along the lawn. In terms of pure Varanasi photography, this was the best twenty minutes of the night. This is where Chaudhary Lawn is genuinely strong for photography: after dark, the walkway turns into a long golden corridor.
